Will Nanotechnology Providing Abundant Resources?

Some futurists such as Ray Kurzweil believe that 3D printing will evolve to a replicator type device through nanotechnology.  If that happens then we have to consider that the ability to create almost anything from base material will make resources more available for less cost to produce.  This would be because the base material could be anything including hydrogen which is the most abundant element in the universe.  With the base material being turned into more high demand materials including food we could develop more sustainable resource production and support a larger populous.  Do you believe this is true?

MagTech Suit Up Available For Free

The second book in the MagTech series is finally finish and published.  It is still waiting on distribution to all of the major book sites, but is available free at the following link:

The MagTech series covers a wide variety of possible technologies of the future and tries to present a feel for how they might affect the average person dealing with those technologies.  First and foremost however, it is an action adventure story that just happens to take place a couple hundred years in the future.  In building the world that it takes place, I tried to get the geopolitical climate of a future that will have to deal with:

·         Jobs being lost to technology
·         Nanotechnology providing abundant resources
·         Extended life expectancy
·         The strain of over population
·         The possibility of brain augmentation
·         And most of all the unexpected consequences of what expanding our brains might be

There are other topics covered in the series including AI, governmental over control, and paranormal powers brought on by genetic manipulation.

Follow up to: Singularity Destruction of Mankind or Blessing to Humanity?

Assuming we agree that there is a potential for an AI to become a Singularity how far do you think we are form it happening?

Bear in mind as I said in the other post I am not sure that NNs will be a candidate for the Singularity. That said one cannot ignore the recent explosion in potential seen with NNs. To name a few Watson, Deep Learning, Google’s self-driving car (though there are other things at work beyond NNs in this), and many other advances in machine learning have all pushed the field far ahead of what it was just two years ago.

Perhaps the singularity will use a hybrid system that relies on NNs for some part of its processing function. It may even use several as slave processes to its primary function. So based on the discussions from the first post I am interested to know your thought as to when the Singularity might happen.
